On Tuesday, May 3, 1921, Irish Volunteers from South Mayo carried out a daring ambush against the RIC and Black and Tans in the village of Tourmakeady. This book contains a selection of articles chosen to recount the events of that day and their aftermath. These articles give accounts that are understandable to readers unfamiliar with Military terminology and tell the story from the participants' viewpoint. There are two transcribed personal accounts meticulously provided by two Volunteers involved in the ambush: Pat Kennedy of Ballinrobe Company and Anthony Joyce of Srah Company. This book also attempts to capture some of the history of the events as relayed through word of mouth, poetry, and Song by the people involved to the generations that followed. This is a snapshot of local history in this part of County Mayo, showcasing the bravery of the people and the sacrifices they made. Read more
